Homecoming Parade

University Avenue on Friday, September 25 at 6:30pm

Created to encourage school spirit and to increase interest in attending Gopher athletic events, the Homecoming Parade also promotes unity among students, staff, faculty, alumni and the surrounding community. This year's parade route is down University Avenue. Watch the parade between 12th Avenue Southeast and Oak Street Southeast or in the Family Viewing Area. The Family Viewing Area is located l at the Donhowe Building parking lot on University, just west of 15th Avenue Southeast, and will feature on-site restrooms, and free face painting,hot chocolate, games, and giveaways beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Grand Marshal: Archie Givens

 

The University of Minnesota Alumni Association chooses a Grand Marshal each year for the parade. Many of these alumni have made great contributions to the Univerisity and/or thier community. Archie Givens (B.A. ’66, M.H.A. ’68) will be the grand marshal for the 2015 Homecoming Parade. An entrepreneur, he has dedicated his work to developing affordable housing and services for seniors and their families. He is the chief executive officer of Legacy Management and Development Corporation and a managing partner of Rainbow Development Corporation. He also serves as president of the Givens Foundation for African American Literature, which is one of the nation’s leading archives of African American literature. His commitment to literacy and education is unyielding and his family’s contributions to the University have made a great impact. The Archie Givens, Sr. Collection of African American Literature at the University of Minnesota Libraries provides students and the public with the opportunity to learn from a rich collection of more than 10,000 African American literature pieces. 

Givens received the University’s Alumni Service Award for his longtime volunteerism in 2011. He was a member of the Golden Gopher football team from 1963 until 1966.

Parking Information

Attendees are encouraged to park at the Oak Street Parking Ramp. The quickest way to access campus and the Oak Street Ramp will be to exit highway 94 at Huron Avenue and follow directional signage to the ramp. Coloring Contest

Enter the Homecoming Coloring Contest. One child from each age group will be featured as special guests in the Parade. One boy and one girl from each age group will also receive a Homecoming prize pack.
